This is a bit old by this point, but still extremely awesome. Arc Matrix is a post by Robin Laws. At the time of that writing, he was getting up to speed with D&D 4e and looking for ways to ensure that characterization wasn’t lost in the shuffle of a new system.

His solution is a matrix of long-term influences that characters can have on one another, with two major outcomes. It’s pretty neat, and I suggest you read it. I’m tempted to do something similar when I get my act together and start running a long-term game.

While this was in the context of D&D, you really could use it anywhere. I could definitely see this being useful in a Vampire: the Requiem game, for example.

I’m going to be a bit content light this week, as I’d like to spend more of my time reading and digesting the new books. Of course, I still have thoughts about what I’m reading and what follows is a collection of thoughts and ideas about what I’ve read so far.

I ran a one-shot of D&D 4th Edition last night. It was kind of a mixed bag for me for a few reasons. I think the PCs had fun, though, and I learned some things.

Amazon told me today that they shipped my copy of the PHB. That means I’ll have it tomorrow afternoon, blog.

While I almost always buy from my FLGS, the (really nice!) guy who runs my FLGS wasn’t sure he’d be getting them in the day of (e.g. Friday, or possibly Saturday). So I decided to hedge my bets. I’m still going to buy the whole set from my FLGS. I also bought a PHB from Amazon, in case I don’t have the books by Friday or so. It was insurance! And now I am getting the books a day earlier than I thought.

But this isn’t why I’m blogging now, blog. I’m blogging because although I’m excited, I’m also remembering that I don’t like core books.

This Chatty fellow happens to have the 4e core books already. And what’s this I see here, in the bit about the DMG? No random treasure tables in 4e. Wow. That’s really interesting.

I’ll confess I’m a little sad, but I think custom designed treasure is mostly better. As I mentioned before, I just like the idea of random wondrous items providing some kind of spontaniety and/or serendipity.

Rituals

Whoops! It’s a third post, as if it is some sort of bonus post, or perhaps as if I am trying to get rid of drafts that won’t be applicable in a week or so.

If you haven’t seen it yet, there’s an excerpt up about Rituals.

I like the theory behind what I’m reading here. D&D had a lot of iconic and interesting spells that were nearly impossible to use. It’s not that they were complicated. It’s that the choice between Magic Missile or Mend wasn’t really a choice. 3e mitigated this somewhat by putting a lot of minor spells into the 0th level category. Still, many higher level spells that were potentially interesting lost out to their more versatile or widely applicable counterparts. 4e is trying to change that.

A concern I’ve heard is about how you rationalize an encounter power in terms of the world. This matters more in the context of martial stuff— it’s at least a bit easier to rationalize needing to rest after divine or arcane powers, mainly because it’s magic and you get a lot more license when it comes to magic.

Here’s my take.

Oh, alignment. You are so — you are so something. If you ever want to start a D&D-related argument, a great way to do this is to talk about alignment. In rare cases, that’s not enough, which means you’ll need to bring out the big guns. Ask as sincerely as possible: what alignment is Batman?
